From Toledo Bend Lake to El Paso

News!  A bill to amend the National Trails System Act to designate El Camino Real de los Tejas as a National Historic Trail was signed into law by the President on 10/18/2004.  Click here for pdf copy Public Law No: 108-342

The El Camino East/West Corridor will run from the Pendleton Bridge on Toledo Bend Lake to El Paso.  Texas Highways 21, 103, 7,  U.S. Highway 290 and Interstate 10 will comprise the corridor in Texas.  The entire five state corridor is eligible for federal funding since it has been accepted into the National Highway System from each state and the Federal Highway Administration.

The corridor will be built using the present two-lane highways listed above and adding additional two-lanes along the same right-of-ways which are being used at the present time.  It is designed to utilize the present right-of-ways and purchase additional amounts of land on one or both sides to add two additional lanes of concrete or asphalt construction.  by using this design and method of construction little, if any, environmental impact will be realized.  this design will not meet Interstate Highway standards because service roads  and overpasses will not be asked for or required to build a modern, safe and dependable highway system through the rural areas and small town of all five states through which this very historic route passes.
